Addressing Bullying Behaviour
Bullying behaviour was once considered a normal part of growing up. Today we know that bullying – or harassment and intimidation, as it is more often called in high schools – is harmful. It leaves young people feeling lonely and frightened – sometimes too afraid to go to school at all.
Are you worried that your child may be involved in, or affected by, bullying? For a parents’ guide to recognizing and responding to bullying behaviour, click here. You’ll find two separate guides – one for parents with children in elementary school, and one addressing issues at the high school level.
Student safety is always a priority for B.C. schools. Every instance of reported bullying must be taken seriously and responded to immediately.
All school districts have policies to protect children’s safety and promote a healthy learning environment. And all schools in the province are required to have Codes of Conduct that set clear expectations about acceptable behaviour, and meet the provincial standards outlined here.
To find out more about school district policies and school Codes of Conduct, contact your local school or district directly.
