Communicating with Teachers & School Staff

Children do their best in school when parents and teachers work together. And everyone benefits from open lines of communication. For example, if you meet your child’s teacher when school starts, you’ll have a chance to tell them anything important they should know about your child. You can also talk about how you can reach them in the future if you have questions or concerns.

Another good way to open up the lines of communication is through parent-teacher interviews. All B.C. public schools hold these meetings to keep parents up-to-date on their children’s progress.

Want to get the most from your parent-teacher interview? Click here for a parents’ guide developed by the B.C. Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils.

Need some advice on resolving an issue? Start by talking to your child’s teacher. If you still have concerns, talk to the vice-principal or principal. If that doesn’t help, contact your board of education.

All B.C. school districts have policies in place for responding to families’ concerns. To learn about your district’s policies, contact the district office directly.
